Mastery of Hand Strength

The GripBible
I must, with all due respect, disagree with the gentleman below, who I think was in a strange 'I love it, BUT ...' mood when he wrote his review.

Brookfield's book does indeed cover it all when it comes to grip, despite its lacks as a medical text-book. You will get to read in-depth descriptions of different grip strength types, and about possible and about improbable grip feats. Many urban legends die here.

Brookfield gives good advice on how to combine the exercises for the different grip types, and also shares his experience on what grip exercises that are best avoided if you want to keep gripping.

He also shares his best grip implements constructions, so that you will be able to walk out of your toolshed with the focused looks of an aspiring gripmaster in your eyes.

If you want to do one thing for your grip, buy that book!

The Ultimate Gripmasters Guide!!
I've been powerlifting and weightlifting for about 5 years now and I bought this book on a whim one day because it looked interesting. This book is simply awesome, a VERY good read! I ended up reading it from cover to cover. I've now become a grip training maniac and I love it. Not only have I learned that grip training is essential and often overlooked, but it's a lot of fun too. The best part is that most of these grip implements that John describes, you can make at home in your garage. Grip work seperates the men from boys, you can't "fake" a powerful grip. John will describe so many ways to work your lower arm, some of them very unorthodox but all very rewarding. People in the gym laughed at me when I first started training grip on a regular basis, now they ask for my advice. An incredible grip will give you more self confidence and respect at the gym than most anything..BUY THIS BOOK! you won't be disappointed!

A Book that delivers what it promises.
To put it short and simple, this is an easy to read, incredibly informative volume on how to increase your hand strength. Lots of exercise suggestions, a little history on hand strength, some strength challenges. So many ideas that get you excited and motivated to train your hands. Truly a great book with lots of info that's very difficult to find elsewhere, and written by a man with some of the strongest hands in history, a genuine authority. If you want to build stronger hands for whatever reason, wrestling, rock climbing, jar opening, showing off, whatever, then this is about the best book you could buy.

Murdered by His Wife
Published in Hardcover by Univ. of Massachusetts Press (December, 1999)
Author: Deborah Navas
Average review score:

Local History at Its Best. An Adventure for the Whole Family
Having just moved to the area, I (a professional historian specializing in modern Europe) have been reading as much local history as possible to get a feel for the history of central Massachusetts. "Murdered By His Wife" is outstanding. Ms. Navas writes with clear, crisp prose, and sticks very close to the original documents, many of which are reproduced in her book. She tells a superb tale of mystery, murder, and intrigue -- and a gripping tragedy about the execution of three revolutionary soldiers and Bethsheba Ruggles Spooner, who was five months pregnant on the day she was hung on Washington Square in Worcester on July 2, 1778.

The best part of this book is that it becomes a challenge and adventure for your whole family to rediscover the route of the story. You can visit murder victim Joshua Spooner's grave in Brookfield Cemetery off Route 9. About 3/4 miles down the road, you can walk, bike, or drive to the site of his and Bethsheba's home, where a plaque still commemorates the notorious murder. Kids of all ages will love the abandoned well still on the property -- the place where Bethsheba Spooner's lover(s) dumped the body (now covered by a stone which leaves enough visible to excite the imagination). You can also find the remnants of the house's old stone foundation, and four large flat stone steps leading from the road to the site of the old house.

The Spooner House is located on Elm Hill, now an historical landmark zone, and large parts of the road are a wildlife sanctuary perfect for spring, summer, or autumn walks. This is one of few places where you can reproduce the feeling of a colonial road and how it stood 200 years ago. The old stone walls along the Old Post Road are still intact, and you get a feeling of being carried back in time.

I highly recommend this book as a basic tour guide for the central Massachusetts leg of your next tour to New England. The site of all the adventure is just 15 minutes off of Exit 9 on Route 90, or the Sturbridge Exit off Highway 84.

Historical Page Turner
Murdered by His Wife by Deborah Navas is at once a gripping "Gothic" page-turner and a solid piece of scholarly research. Navas writes in an elegant, clear and concise manner. A fine balance is sustained between objective, documented reporting and carefully considered interpretation which is never allowed to override the facts. The book is packed with information including fascinating transcripts of eighteenth century testimony. While the narrative stands on its own as a riveting drama that will appeal to the general public, the book should be of special interest to historians, legal historians, feminists sociologists and psychologists. In my opinion this is a landmark book.

Incredibly shocking
Hard to believe this happened and so close to home! Exceptionally detailed account!

"One of the most famous libraries of the ancient world was at Alexandria in Egypt. Scholars and scientists came from all over the Greek-speaking world to study there and to add to the library's collections by translating and copying more tests. At one tiome it is said to have more than 400,000 works on papyrus rolls stored on shelves, each with a label to identify it."

Brookfield, Illinois, a history :
Published in Unknown Binding by The Committee ()
Average review score:

Brookfield Illinois A History
This book presents an excellent resource of the history of the Village of Brookfield, Cook County, Illinois. The work begins with the colorful background of S. Gross, the real estate developer of the community and for whom the community was originally named (Grossdale) - until a dispute arose between the residents and Mr. Gross. Within the history of the community (composed of Grossdale, West Grossdale/Congress Park, and Hollywood) is to be found the history of the Chicago Zoological Park, commonly known as the Brookfield Zoo. Well recommended for information on the early development of a western Chicago suburb during the 1890's. Filled with many interesting anecdotes.

This book tells much about the Brookfields of Massachusetts, in Worcester County. It focuses on all the Brookfields including North Brookfield, East Brookfield, West Brookfield, and Brookfield. Showing many pictures, and captions on each town. Since I live in one of the Brookfields, I must say that this is a very interesting picture book to see. Tells, history, and other facts. Well worth.

E Is for Empire: A New York State Alphabet (Discover America State by State. Alphabet Series)
Published in Hardcover by Sleeping Bear Press (April, 2003)
Authors: Ann Burg and Maureen Brookfield
Average review score:

Learning America State by State
This is a great idea put together! By taking the alphabet and teaching kids a neat way by using rhymes to learn A to Z interesting facts on history and culture about each state in America. I pick this one as my favorite about the state of New York. Each letter describes a featured N.Y. landmark, like B is for Brooklyn. H is for Henry Hudson the explorer from which the river is named after. I wish they had books like this when I was a kid. What's so bad about a book that can educate kids with lots of original, intelligent contents. All 50 states are fun to collect, too-because of all the really beautifully illustrated works.

Understanding and Facilitating Adult Learning : A Comprehensive Analysis of Principles and Effective Practices
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (July, 1991)
Author: Stephen D. Brookfield
Average review score:

Understanding and Facilitating Adult Learning
A thoroughly researched and extensively documented book which efficiently outlines 20 years of studies on adult learning. Effective adulte learning practices are explained in from six categories, voluntary engagement, respect among participants, collaboration and negaotiation of needs, relective praxis, critical appreciation of diversity, and student empowerment of self improvement. Aside from the institutional mode of learning, external authority, set objectives, set teaching roles, prescribed evaluation, adult learning seeks to empower self directed learners with critical thinking modes. This latter kind of learning is not without risk. The risks of dillusion, professional incompetence, and the perils of playing close to a kind of classroom therapy. Nonetheless, adult students bring a wealth of experience (good and bad), maturity, problem posing, problem solving, and task focus to adult learning. Finally, adult learning will invariably be restricted by institutional contexts, evalution criteria, and contextual business norms.
